Manchester United are out of the League Cup. They led Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 inside ten minutes at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and lost 3-2, per Sky Sports and ESPN. Shea Lacey, 19, scored on his first start, the first teenager to do that for Manchester United since Marcus Rashford, per ESPN and Goal, which cites Opta. Mason Mount scored the second.
Brighton and Hove Albion scored the next three. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, and Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper scored in the second half, per Sky Sports and ESPN. ESPN says it was the first home game Manchester United have lost from two goals up since a 3-2 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in 1976, and Sky Sports puts the gap at 50 years.
Old Trafford booed at full time. Michael Carrick told Sky Sports: "I take responsibility for it. The performance towards the end of the second half, that's on me." ESPN carries the same words. Asked about the boos, he told Sky Sports: "I totally understand the feelings of the supporters." He also told reporters, per ESPN's Rob Dawson: "I don't feel under pressure."
