The charges cover nine seasons, 2009-10 to 2017-18, per The Athletic and ABC News. No sanction has been decided. The possible range runs from a fine to a points deduction to expulsion from the league, and City are expected to appeal.
A City spokesperson told The Athletic: "The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality."
The Manchester United angle is one season. In 2011-12 both clubs finished on 89 points, and City won the title on goal difference, +64 to +56, per the Premier League and Sky Sports. City won three league titles inside the charged seasons, per ABC News.
There is a recent precedent for one club paying another over a financial-rules breach. Everton were ordered to pay Burnley more than £35m over their profit-and-sustainability breach, per ESPN and Sky Sports, and Everton are appealing.
