Newcastle United's position hardened this week. Stretty News reported on 4 August, citing multiple sources, that Newcastle United have no intention of selling Lewis Hall and are not open to any offers. Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk put the valuation at 60m pounds on 30 July. The number and the refusal arriving together is usually a club saying the price is not the point.
Inside Old Trafford the move is already agreed. Fabrizio Romano reported on 1 August that a move for Hall has been approved internally and an opening proposal of around 60m pounds is being prepared. David Ornstein has Hall as Michael Carrick's first-choice left-back, brought in to compete with Luke Shaw. Ben Jacobs is the check on both: initial enquiries only, no club-to-club contact. Nothing has been bid.
The 60m pounds figure carries a second meaning. It would make a 21-year-old the most expensive arrival of Manchester United's window, above the 50m pounds paid to Chelsea for Andrey Santos and the 35m pound release clause triggered at Aston Villa for Youri Tielemans. That is a summer past 145m pounds on three players, one of whom is a left-back.
Newcastle United's reluctance is not really about Hall either. Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have both left this summer, and Bruno Guimaraes is expected at Arsenal. A fourth departure is a different kind of problem, and 60m pounds does not solve that kind.
