Matthias Jaissle said "no chance" twice when Peter Schmeichel asked him. Manchester United have eight days of the window left, no new left-back, and an alternative in Barcelona who was left out of their opening squad.
Manchester United went into this window looking for a left-back to compete with Luke Shaw, per Sky Sports and ESPN. They have not signed one, and on Sunday the most direct route closed in public.
Asked by Peter Schmeichel whether Lewis Hall could join Manchester United, Newcastle United's head coach Matthias Jaissle answered twice. "No chance! No chance!" The exchange came after Newcastle United's 2-2 draw with Liverpool and was carried by Goal and by football365, the latter quoting Fabrizio Romano's account that Jaissle had "definitely closed the door".
The alternative is Alejandro Balde. Barcelona named 23 players for their La Liga opener at Elche on 23 August and Balde was not among them, with Gerard Martin and Eric Garcia in the defensive group instead. Romano says Manchester United "are in a conversation" with Barcelona and that the club are "open to selling Balde in case of a good proposal", while adding that the player is not pushing to leave. ESPN reported on 23 August that Balde is open to a move. Two named outlets, two readings of the same player, and this desk records it CONTESTED rather than picking one.
Everything else Manchester United have done this summer sits in other positions. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans cost a combined £85m, Karl Darlow arrived free from Leeds United, and Carlos Baleba came from Brighton and Hove Albion. Antonee Robinson at Fulham has been on the list since June, per Sky Sports, and David Raum at RB Leipzig has been offered to the club, RUMOUR, reported by talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs.
Michael Carrick put it plainly on 13 August, in a quote carried by both Sky Sports and ESPN: "We always want to improve. We want more, we need more." The window shuts on 1 September 2026.
