World Cup · Day 10

Germany dig deep. The Dutch send a message.

Undav's late winner books Germany's place; the Netherlands hit five.

Germany are through, but they made hard work of it. Deniz Undav scored twice against Ivory Coast in Toronto, his winner landing in stoppage time to settle a two one game that asked far more of them than the opening rout did. The Netherlands had no such trouble, pulling Sweden apart five one in Houston to lay down a marker. Japan kept their strong tournament going, beating Tunisia four nil with Daichi Kamada scoring inside four minutes. Ecuador and Curaçao played out a goalless draw in Kansas City. Two European heavyweights showed their range on the same afternoon, one by grinding it out, one in style. The knockout picture is hardening.
