International Football · Day 38

Ten goals in Miami, and England take third.

England 6-4 France. Bukayo Saka scored three, Kylian Mbappe scored two, and the record books moved.

England led 4-0 at half time and still needed six. Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa scored, Bukayo Saka scored twice before the break, and the third-place match looked settled. France did not accept that. Bradley Barcola pulled one back, then Kylian Mbappe scored in the 48th minute and the 66th, and 4-0 became 4-3. England found two more. Saka completed his hat-trick. Ten goals is the most a World Cup third-place match has ever produced, and the most in any World Cup game since Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in 1982. Mbappe's two took him past Lionel Messi as the tournament's all-time leading scorer. A dead rubber, on paper.
