Why have the Atlanta Falcons made Bijan Robinson the highest-paid running back in NFL history?
Bijan Robinson has signed a three-year extension with the Atlanta Falcons carrying a record 51 million dollars guaranteed, and it arrived while he was sitting out training camp.
Bijan Robinson has the biggest running back contract in NFL history, and he got it by not turning up.
The Atlanta Falcons announced the extension on 4 August 2026. It runs three years, and the number that makes it a record is the guarantee: 51 million dollars, with 37 million paid at signing. Reported totals vary by outlet, with Athlon Sports and Sports Illustrated putting the maximum value at up to 75 million dollars, so the guarantee is the figure worth holding onto. It is the part the club cannot walk away from.
The deal begins after Robinson's fifth-year option in 2027 and ties him to Atlanta through 2030.
He earned it in every phase. Last season Robinson ran for 1,478 yards and seven touchdowns on 287 carries, and caught 79 passes for 820 yards and four more scores. A back who is also a primary receiving option is not the kind of running back the position's pay scale was built around, which is precisely the argument being made on his behalf while he stayed away.
Because he did stay away. Robinson missed training camp during the negotiation, and the extension arrived while he was off the field.
Running backs spent a decade being told the position was not worth paying at the top of the market. This is the clearest answer yet to that.
The same week cost the Atlanta Falcons something too. Edge rusher Jalon Walker went down with a knee injury feared to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament, reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. That one is not confirmed, and this entry does not treat it as settled.
