Alejandro Balde has told Barcelona he wants to stay and fight for his place. Fabrizio Romano reported the decision on Wednesday 26 August, adding that only a big proposal from a top European club would change the picture before Deadline Day, and that Manchester United asked about conditions without ever sending a bid.
ESPN's reporting from the same day matches. Barcelona will not force the 22-year-old out, and Manchester United's preferred structure was a loan carrying an option to buy rather than an obligation. Balde was left out of Barcelona's squad for Sunday's 5-0 win over Elche, and Hansi Flick said he told the player it was better that he cleared his mind while the speculation ran. The omission had read like a door opening; Balde has now shut it.
The alternative routes are no better. David Ornstein reports that a Lewis Hall move this window is unlikely, that Newcastle United are not selling, and that Manchester United plan to return for him next summer. Michael Carrick has said the club will stay active to Deadline Day, which is Tuesday 1 September. Staying active and signing somebody are different things, and nobody has printed a name with a medical booked.
Wednesday also produced the Carabao Cup third-round draw. Manchester United host Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the weeks commencing 7 and 14 September, one day after the clubs completed the 65 million pound Carlos Baleba transfer, so the first reunion arrives inside a month. Elsewhere in the round, Liverpool drew Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield and Ipswich Town host Arsenal.
Ipswich Town come to Old Trafford first, in the Premier League on Sunday at 16:30 BST, with Manchester United winless after the 2-0 defeat at Hull City. Whoever starts at left-back on Sunday may be the answer for the rest of the season, whether the club meant it that way or not.
