Manchester United had a route out for Joshua Zirkzee and the player closed it. Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday 31 August that Fiorentina sent Manchester United a proposal worth a 5 million euro loan fee plus a 30 million euro buy option, and that Zirkzee turned the move down. REPORTED, one named reporter, and neither club has put anything on the record.
What followed is the part that keeps the file open. Romano says Juventus contacted Manchester United on Sunday night about the same player, and that their interest depends on Jonathan David leaving Turin first. That makes a Zirkzee exit conditional on a transfer at another club in another country, with a day of the window left. Fiorentina, meanwhile, have moved on: Sky Sports reported Everton's Beto travelling to Tuscany for a medical.
One piece of business did finish. Manchester United confirmed on Saturday that Toby Collyer has joined West Bromwich Albion permanently. The fee starts at 3 million pounds and rises to 7.6 million with add-ons tied to promotion, European qualification and England recognition, and Manchester United keep a 40 per cent sell-on clause and a buy-back option. That is the highest figure a named source has printed and it is the one this desk leads on.
The left-back file has not moved since Sunday. Manchester United enquired about Ian Maatsen of Aston Villa, carried independently by Pete O'Rourke on 29 August and by Sky Sports News reporter Danyal Khan on 30 August, and Villa's answer is a new contract rather than a price. Lewis Hall, Alejandro Balde, David Raum and Jorge Salinas have all been discussed at some point this summer and none of them has become a signing. Luke Shaw is still the only natural left-back at the club.
The deadline is fixed. The Premier League window closes at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September, with a two-hour grace period for clubs that lodge a deal sheet in time, a return to the later close after two summers of 7pm deadlines. Manchester United beat Ipswich Town 5-2 on Sunday with a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick, which changes the mood and not the squad list.
