At the FIA press conference before the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid on Thursday 10 September, Alonso was asked when news on his 2027 plans would come. "Not soon," he said, per the FIA's official transcript. Asked why the delay, he replied: "Because I think it's nice, no?"
His contract with Aston Martin runs to the end of the 2026 season, per Sky Sports and MotorBiscuit.
He gave one more answer that day. Asked whether an Aston Martin programme in another series, such as the World Endurance Championship, could replace Formula 1 in 2027, he answered "Yes", per the FIA transcript. He also said the decision depends on what the 2027 rules do "on the racing and on the driving side of things". The current cars, he said, "are not the best cars to drive and to enjoy". Other drivers visited Aston Martin's Lawrence Stroll over the summer, he said, "so no urgency".
Aston Martin is not naming alternatives. "I will not give you any names," Mike Krack, the team's chief trackside officer, said, per Motorsport Week and MotorBiscuit.
