This week Ornstein's position is that the move looks unlikely, because Newcastle United intend to hold on to him. Fabrizio Romano has not moved. His line is that the deal is approved inside Old Trafford and that an opening bid of around 60m pounds is being prepared. Romano's own caveat is that Newcastle United will make it complicated. The Athletic reported this week that Newcastle United are privately insisting Hall will not leave this summer.
So the two best-sourced reporters on this story agree the interest is real and disagree on whether it survives. Neither has reported a bid actually being lodged. Fabrizio Romano says the opposite, that as of today he does not see Manchester United working on Conceicao. Both camps are named here because neither can be dismissed. Status: CONTESTED.
What is settled is the midfield. Andrey Santos joined from Chelsea for 50m pounds, 48m guaranteed plus 2m in add-ons, with Chelsea keeping a 10 per cent sell-on and the contract running to June 2031. Youri Tielemans joined from Aston Villa for 35m pounds over five years after a release clause was activated. Karl Darlow signed. Casemiro left on a free. Ornstein says a third midfielder is still wanted.
That is 85m pounds spent on two midfielders, and a left-back who is still Newcastle United's player.
