Newcastle United have answered the question that has hung over Manchester United's window for two weeks. Sky Sports report the club have told Manchester United that Lewis Hall is not for sale this summer, and that it would take an offer north of 60m pounds to move the conversation at all. David Ornstein, on The Athletic FC podcast, says he does not expect Hall to join Manchester United this window, with Newcastle United's resolve hardened since Eddie Howe left.
The pursuit was real. Fabrizio Romano reported on 1 August that Manchester United had internally approved the signing, with an opening proposal of around 60m pounds being prepared. Ben Jacobs reported at the same time that there had been no club-to-club contact, and no bid has been reported since.
Goal report Hall left Newcastle United's training camp in Spain early and flew home while the story ran. Nothing about the club's position travelled with him.
The context is what makes the refusal notable. Newcastle United have sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal this summer, and lost their head coach. The line has been drawn at the left-back.
Manchester United have signed Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow this window and loaned Altay Bayindir to Celta Vigo, and left-back is the one open brief. The window closes at 23:00 BST on Tuesday 1 September, and the league season opens at Hull City on Saturday 22 August at 12:30.
So the fallback is already moving. Fabrizio Romano reports that Jorge Salinas, a 19-year-old left-back at Racing de Santander, has been offered to Manchester United.
