Arsenal have existed for around 140 years and had never played in a European Cup final. They played in one on 30 May 2026 and lost it from twelve yards, which is the sort of joke the competition has been making at somebody's expense since 1955.
The match
Ousmane Dembélé put Paris Saint-Germain ahead from the penalty spot on 65 minutes, per UEFA's own match record and ESPN. Kai Havertz equalised, taking three touches with his left foot before finishing with the fourth into the roof of the net.
Extra time separated nobody. It finished 1-1 at the Puskás Aréna, and a final that had been played carefully by two sides who both knew what was at stake went to the format designed to end such evenings quickly and cruelly.
The shootout
Paris Saint-Germain won it 4-3. Eberechi Eze missed, and then Gabriel Magalhães missed Arsenal's fifth, per Al Jazeera and CNN. Vitinha was named man of the match.
Why it mattered
Paris Saint-Germain retained the European Cup, which is the part that will age best. A club whose entire modern project was built to win this once had now won it twice in a row, and the second is always the harder argument to make.
Arsenal's is the longer story. A first final in the club's history, a lead they never had, a draw they could not turn, and a shootout that will get replayed for as long as the club goes without one. There is no consolation available in a Champions League final and Arsenal did not receive any.
