Istanbul 2026: Aston Villa win a European trophy again

Quick answer

Aston Villa beat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the 2026 Europa League final at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul on 20 May 2026. Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers scored. It is Aston Villa's first Europa League title.

Aston Villa last won a European trophy in Rotterdam in 1982, beating Bayern Munich with a squad most of England had written off. The wait ended in Istanbul, and this time nobody needed a shock to explain it.

The match

Villa won 3-0. Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers scored, per UEFA's own final highlights record and ESPN's match report. Buendía was named man of the match, and Rogers was named the tournament's best player.

Three goals in a European final is a scoreline that hides a contest, and SC Freiburg had reached the final from a starting position nobody in Germany would have predicted either. A first Europa League final for the club ended without a goal in it.

Why it mattered

It is Aston Villa's first Europa League, their first European trophy in 44 years, and their first trophy of any kind since the 1996 League Cup, per UEFA and ESPN. A club that had gone three decades without lifting anything won a European competition and did it without needing a close match.

Tielemans has since left. Manchester United signed him and Andrey Santos for a combined £85m in the summer of 2026, per Sky Sports and ESPN, so the man who opened the scoring in Villa's European final started the following season in a different shirt. That is the modern version of winning something.
