The Conference League gets treated as European football's third division with a trophy attached, right up until a club that has never won anything wins it. Crystal Palace had never won a European trophy. Now they have.
The match
It finished 1-0. Jean-Philippe Mateta turned in a rebound in the second half after Adam Wharton's long-range shot was saved by the Rayo Vallecano goalkeeper Batalla, per Crystal Palace's own match report and ESPN.
The first half had the tension and the imprecision that finals between two sides who rarely reach them tend to produce. Palace's best moment before the goal was a Tyrick Mitchell header that went narrowly wide. Rayo Vallecano pushed after it and did not equalise.
Why it mattered
It is Crystal Palace's first European title, and it carried them into the league phase of the 2026-27 Europa League, which is the practical reward the competition was built to hand out.
Mateta is the detail worth keeping. A striker signed from Mainz who spent years being described as a squad option scored the goal that won a European trophy, off a rebound, which is where most of them come from once the highlight reel is switched off.
