Cameroon had lost three Women's Africa Cup of Nations finals before this one. Malawi had never played in the tournament at all until three weeks earlier. Both of those facts stopped being true on the same evening in Rabat.
The match
Cameroon won 3-0. Marie Ngah scored on 20 minutes and again in first-half stoppage time, and Naomi Eto scored on 30 minutes, per Al Jazeera's report of the final.
Three goals inside the first half against a side ranked 153rd in the world is the tournament's form book reasserting itself, and it took until the final to do so.
Malawi
Malawi arrived at their first Women's Africa Cup of Nations ranked 153rd in the world and 32nd in Africa, per Al Jazeera. Their opening match was against Nigeria, the defending champions and the most successful national team on the continent, and they won it 3-1, with Temwa Chawinga scoring twice and her sister Tabitha scoring the other.
They then reached the final. On debut. Ranked 153rd.
Why it mattered
Cameroon's is the win, and a fourth final is where most teams stop trying to describe the previous three. The Indomitable Lionesses are champions of Africa for the first time.
Malawi's is the story the tournament will be remembered by. A team nobody had a plan for beat the holders in their first match and lost the final, and the two Chawinga sisters spent a fortnight making an argument in a Malawi shirt that they had spent their careers making in other people's leagues.
